The book assembles for the first time on this scale a certain part of Arp’s production of the 1950s and 60s, his papiers découpés, cut-out papers, which were not fixed to a support, but stored by the artist in boxes and folders. Today they form the contents of drawers from a draftsman’s cabinet in the Fondazione Marguerite Arp, based in Arp’s last home and studio in Locarno-Solduno. On the one hand we find biomophic, ‘free’ forms which had a specific function in the creative process, in that they could be made into collages or could serve as a basis for prints, reliefs or occasionally sculptures. On the other hand there are forms that Arp called Poupées, a clearly defined group of doll-shaped, symmetrical figures: in their myriad variations but also in the repetition of the same theme, these forms are so striking and so numerous that they constitute a distinct formal category in the artist’s mature work.
